With a great diversity of wildlife, India today holds the reputation for owning the largest number of wildcat species in the world. These species range from diminutive cats which are at first glance indistinguishable from the domestic tabby, to the reclusive 'modern sabretooth' – and the biggest big cat of all. Most are threatened by habitat loss, conflict with farmers, dwindling numbers or hunting. And many, despite being amongst the most iconic and mythologised wild animals, remain little understood and difficult to study.
'Kalal' red Varanasi silk brocade sari features diagonal motifs made of the iconic Asiatic Lion, Bengal Tiger, Asiatic Cheetah and the Leopard. It has a heavy border that incorporates animal stripes in a geometric form.
Blouse worn by the model is not included. Natural variations in colours and weave are part of the textile, as it is handwoven.
